ICT for HIV/AIDS Surveillance and Reporting Training Course

INTRODUCTION

About the Course

HIV/AIDS surveillance and reporting enhances efforts to prevent HIV transmission, improve allocation of resources for treatment services, and assist in evaluating the impact of public health interventions. This course will provide training in new methods, techniques and best practices related to effective reporting data on AIDS cases, new infections, and behavior and characteristics of people at high risk to relevant authorities. The general aims of the course are to familiarize participants with ICT including mobile phone and tablets in data collection and disseminating of HIV/AIDS surveillance to providers and institutions responsible for implementation of HIV/AIDS prevention control.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course the learners should be able to:  

  • Increase capacities of participants in development and implementation of HIV/AIDS surveillance and reporting
  • Provide a practical overview of methods and approaches used in surveillance data collection, analysis and reporting
  • Introduce participants to ICT with the emphasis on open data kit in collecting HIV/AIDS data
  • Describe the importance of dissemination of HIV/AIDS surveillance data to providers and institutions responsible for implementation of HIV/AIDS prevention and control programmes
  • Assist participants in applying the course contents in their countries

Module 1: Introduction

  • Global HIV/AIDS epidemiology and the impact of the epidemic
  • General principles and key epidemiological issues of public health surveillance
  • Components of HIV surveillance systems
  • Basic HIV surveillance principles and concepts
  • Establishing a HIV surveillance system

Module 2: HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data

  • Obtaining useful and high-quality data
  • Examining data to determine the distribution of infection
  • Principles of effective data use
  • Using surveillance to evaluate effectiveness of programmatic response and programme coverage
  • Most common weaknesses in HIV surveillance data
  • Sources of bias in HIV surveys
  • Mechanisms for an efficient system for using data

Module 3: HIV/AIDS Data Collection Using ODK

  • Introduction to ODK
  • Preparing the mobile phone for data collection
  • ODK basics training
  • ODK survey and implementation

Module 4: Analyzing HIV/AIDS Surveillance data

  • Sorting the data records
  • Performing summary statistics (for numerical data)
  • Summarizing data into frequency tables
  • Calculating percentages and rates.

Module 5: Writing Surveillance Report

  • Steps in producing national HIV report
  • Presentation of data for different audiences
  • Developing interesting and persuasive presentations
  • Bringing together programme planning and advocacy
  • Presenting data to specific user groups

Closure

Methodology
This instructor led training course is delivered using a blended learning approach and comprises of presentations, guided sessions of practical exercise, web based tutorials and group work. Our facilitators are seasoned industry experts with years of experience, working as professional and trainers in these fields.

All facilitation and course materials will be offered in English. The participants should be reasonably proficient in English.

Accreditation

Upon successful completion of this training, participants will be issued with a certificate of participation.

 Training venue

The training is residential and will be held at the Livecode Technologies Training Centre in Westlands, Nairobi, Kenya. The course fee covers the course tuition, training materials, two break refreshments, lunch, and study visits.

All participants will additionally cater for their, travel expenses, visa application, insurance, and other personal expenses.

The course fee is KES 65,000.00 or USD 900.00 exclusive of VAT. The course fees covers the course tuition, training materials, two (2) break refreshments, lunch and study visits. Participants will cater for their travel and accommodation costs.
