Data collection has always been an integral part of development work. In the past, this task was performed with paper and pen, which made it prone to error, difficult to conduct on a large scale, and high in transaction costs.

ICT tools such as mobile devices and software that allows users to create surveys, collect, manage and upload data to storage facilities in real-time, have reduced the conventional challenges associated with remote data collection.

- The course will introduce participants to tools and techniques for rapid data collection using innovative mobile data collection tools.

- Design mobile data collection forms using KoboToolbox (online and offline).

- Deploy and manage surveys for field data collection.

- Collect data using Android devices and manage submissions.

- Export and clean datasets for analysis.

- Conduct statistical analysis and visualization using R.

- Generate automated analytical reports and dashboards.

Topics to be covered

Module I: Introduction to Mobile Data Collection and KoboToolbox

• Overview of digital data collection tools

• Introduction to KoboToolbox ecosystem (KoboForm, KoboCollect, KoboCAT)

• Setting up KoboToolbox accounts (humanitarian and non-humanitarian servers)

• Basics of XLSForm and form structure (survey, choices, settings)

• Designing simple survey forms

• Field practice: Deploying a basic form and submitting sample data

Module II: Advanced Form Design in KoboToolbox

• Adding skips, constraints, and relevance logic

• Using GPS, images, audio, and barcode questions

• Cascading select questions

• Pre-loading and auto-calculation fields

• Version control and updating deployed forms

• Hands-on exercise: Building a complex M&E survey form

• Exporting and managing collected data (CSV, XLS, JSON)

Module III: Data Management and Quality Assurance

• Data validation and error checking in KoboToolbox

• Cleaning data in Excel and R

• Merging multiple datasets

• Using R to automate data import from KoboToolbox API

• Ensuring data quality and consistency

• Backing up and archiving field data

Hands-on Exercises

Module IV: Data Analysis and Visualization in R

• Introduction to R and RStudio environment

• Data wrangling using tidyverse (dplyr, tidyr)

• Generating descriptive statistics and frequency tables

• Data visualization using ggplot2

• Creating thematic maps with Kobo GPS data (using sf and tmap)

• Hands-on session: Building a basic analytical dashboard in R

Methodology

This instructor led training course is delivered using a blended learning approach and comprises of presentations, guided sessions of practical exercise, web based tutorials and group work. Our facilitators are seasoned industry experts with years of experience, working as professional and trainers in these fields.

All facilitation and course materials will be offered in English. Participants should be reasonably proficient in English.

Upon successful completion of this training, participants will be issued with a certificate of participation.

 Training venue

The training is residential and will be held at the Livecode Technologies Training Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. The course fee covers the course tuition, training materials, two break refreshments, lunch, and study visits.

All participants will additionally cater for their, travel expenses, visa application, insurance, and other personal expenses.
