GIS for Humanitarian Assistance Course
INTRODUCTION
The course focuses on the specific skills needed to support emergency relief efforts, with an emphasis on finding, importing, and managing spatial data in regions with poor infrastructures. The aim of this training is to explore applications of GIS analysis in humanitarian assistance, and more broadly in emergency management.

- No prior knowledge of GIS
- Participants must carry personal laptops for software installations
OBJECTIVES AND OUTPUT TO PARTICIPANTS
By the end of this course you will learn:
- Demonstrate key applications of GIS for humanitarian assistance.
- Apply the geospatial technologies to humanitarian assistance.
- Identify the spatial tools and methodologies that are currently being utilized within humanitarian, human rights and disaster research, prevention, and response.
- Reflect on existing power structures of data, diversity of narratives, and digital colonialism as it affects the humanitarian space.
- Critically review the limitations, ethics, and challenges of spatial data and methods in the humanitarian sector.
- Learn the subjectivity of the visualization of spatial data and ways to clearly communicate outcomes.
- Understand how spatial technologies can be leveraged to explore and address diverse thematic areas relevant to the humanitarian sector in novel ways.

COURSE CONTENT
Module 1:
Skills needed to support emergency relief efforts, with an emphasis on finding, importing, and managing spatial data in regions with poor infrastructures.
Module 2:
Applications of GIS analysis in humanitarian assistance, and more broadly in emergency management.
Module 3:
- Spatial tools and methodologies that are currently being utilized within humanitarian, human rights and disaster research, prevention, and response.
- Power structures of data, diversity of narratives, and digital colonialism as it affects the humanitarian space.
Module 4:
- Limitations, ethics, and challenges of spatial data and methods in the humanitarian sector.
- Visualization of spatial data and ways .
Module 5:
Spatial technologies leveraged to explore and address diverse thematic areas relevant to the humanitarian sector in novel ways.
Methodology
This instructor led training course is delivered using a blended learning approach and comprises of presentations, guided sessions of practical exercise, web based tutorials and group work. Our facilitators are seasoned industry experts with years of experience, working as professional and trainers in these fields.
All facilitation and course materials will be offered in English. The participants should be reasonably proficient in English.
Accreditation
Upon successful completion of this training, participants will be issued with a Livecode Technologies certificate.
Training Venue
The training is residential and will be held at the Livecode Technologies Training Center in Westlands, Nairobi, Kenya. The course fee covers the course tuition, training materials, two break refreshments, lunch, and study visits.
All participants will additionally cater for their, travel expenses, visa application, insurance, and other personal expenses.

Training Fees
The course fees is KES 70,000.00 or USD 1000.00 exclusive of VAT. The course fees covers the course tuition, training materials, two (2) break refreshments, lunch and study visits. Participants will cater for their travel and accommodation costs.

Cancellation Policy
Payment for the all courses includes a registration fee, which is non-refundable, and equals 15% of the total sum of the course fee.
